FIT certification for Pongamia Despair is confirmed for this season.
Tailwind is blowing for opposition to construction of Ishinomaki Biomass Power Plant G-Bio Ishinomaki Sue Power Project G-Bio Ishinomaki Sue G-Bio Fuel.P Pongamia

The G-Bio Ishinomaki Sue Power Generation Project, which is being planned by G-Bio Ishinomaki Sue LLC and G-Bio Initiative, will be fueled by a next-generation vegetable oil fuel called “G-Bio Fuel.
This fuel is made from a vegetable oil called “pongamia.
P. This fuel is made from a vegetable oil called “pongamia”. Initially, the plan was to use palm oil to generate electricity, but environmental groups around the world have called for a ban on the use of palm oil because it is produced through large-scale development that is accompanied by deforestation, environmental pollution, loss of biodiversity, and other degradation of the global environment.
In Japan as well, two palm oil power plants in Maizuru City and Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, were forced to withdraw their operations and completely shut down due to opposition from local residents.
P” (Pongamia), a next-generation vegetable oil fuel that does not use palm oil, but has the potential to have a significant negative impact on the natural environment of Ishinomaki City. Pongamia is one of the largest pongamia plants in Japan.
Pongamia has never been used for large-scale power generation in Japan, so it can be said that it is a completely unknown power generation system.
The residents of the Sue area of Ishinomaki City, where the plant will be built, are growing increasingly concerned, but there is good news. There is no mention of pongamia as a new fuel in the biomass power generation guidelines issued by the Renewable Energy Agency, which are revised once a year.
This means that, at worst, Pongamia will no longer be approved for FIT in 2021, and this is the result of the G-Bio Ishinomaki-Sue power generation project, which has been pushing for residents’ explanatory meetings in a manner that could be called forceful, to wait. With at least a year’s grace, the residents’ movement can now continue its opposition without haste or worry.
This is a video about the situation.

Toxicity in Biomass Oil for Power Generation? It has come to light that the biomass oil (pongamia oil) used in biomass power generation in Ishinomaki City contains ingredients of an insecticide!

Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Date: October 30, 2020 A surprising document was released at the 62nd meeting of the Procurement Price Calculation Committee.
In the 62nd Meeting of the Procurement Price Calculation Committee, it was announced that pongamia oil, which is being considered for use in biomass power generation in Ishinomaki, contains a small amount of a toxic substance called carandin.
According to Wikipedia, carandine is a toxic substance that is used in tick repellents and insecticides and cannot be used in food, cosmetics, detergents, etc.

Hypothesis: Mosquito coils are harmless, but burning them in large quantities may have an effect on the human body.
I’m sure that safety has been carefully planned, but even if it doesn’t affect the human body, is it really safe for the environment of Ishinomaki City to burn a large amount of oil (200 tons per day) that contains insecticide ingredients? We were unable to obtain any verified data.

We do not understand how it is safe for the ecosystem of Ishinomaki City to continue to burn 200 tons of pongamia oil per day, even if the amount of insecticides contained in the oil is very small, 73,000 tons per year, and 1.46 million tons over 20 years.

We searched the Internet for data on biomass oil power generation around the world, but could not find any comparable data on power generation or other examples.

This is probably the world’s first and largest power plant that uses pongamia, but we believe that there have been no cases in the past of burning oil that contains the same insecticidal ingredients.

Even if there is no effect on the human body, if the insects in Ishinomaki City are killed by burning the pesticide ingredients, there is a possibility that it will have a significant impact on the ecosystem.

I would like to pursue this issue in the future.
